Simon Johnson’s review of Chelsea’s win over Everton on Saturday is very interesting.
Without getting ahead of ourselves, it shows what a significant result this could be when we look back at the end of the season. He called it a result that could make teams around us “stand up and take notice.” There are several reasons why this could be a major signal that we are seeing the emergence of a new Chelsea.
Chelsea got physical and beat Everton
Firstly, beating Everton away from home is not something Chelsea have achieved in recent years. They have one win and just two goals in their last NINE league matches.
Second, the Blues kept a clean sheet – something they haven’t done in the league since January – and Everton kept their chances to a minimum.
Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, a Chelsea team that has folded under the slightest pressure or physical challenge in recent years actually got a big test here. Midway through the first half, after Harrison Armstrong’s hard tackle, the home crowd suddenly roared and trouble ensued.
Instead of losing and conceding, Chelsea stood their ground, executed their own big tasks and went on to win the game. It’s just a match, but there’s no denying that the signs are god.
In other news…
Due to the injury of “Chelsea” goalkeeper Amy Martinez, the order of beating goalkeepers has been changed for some time.
Xabi Alonso confirmed on Saturday that Pep Chavarria will undergo tests on the injury he picked up in training ahead of the game against Everton.
