The news that Reece James has undergone knee surgery and will be out for three months meant questions were raised for Xabi Alonso today about whether he feels he has enough options in midfield until the captain returns in January.
Some are worried that the current selection will not be enough, and many now trust Moises Caicedo.
Alonso downplays his transfer chances
“We have four more games in the Premier League before the next break, a cup game, so I think we can manage well with the players we have, the players they play and the options we have, so we feel good,” Alonso said.
Of course, he’s speaking from a short-term perspective – so reporters asked for more details on whether Alonso thinks it will affect his January plans:
“No, I don’t think so [we expect to sign another midfielder] because we expect him to be back by then, a couple of weeks ago, so let’s see, it’s not an exact timeline with him, so it doesn’t affect [our plans].”
We’d still be surprised if Chelsea didn’t make an attempt to sign someone, but they certainly aren’t panicking about their options like some fans.
