Fleetwood beat Arsenal in a truly amazing EFL Cup match at Highbury (not that).
The home side took the lead, the Gunners hit back, but in a game that went to penalties after 90 minutes, the League 2 side produced some spectacular strikes to beat the English champions.
It was a magical evening. Of course, some people couldn’t enjoy it – Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was one of them. He spoke to the media at the right time about his feelings about the result.
Fleetwood stun Arsenal and Arteta praises them
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Basque coach had some big thoughts on the defeat.
“Congratulations to Fleetwood, it’s a sad day for us. But I can’t fault the attitude of the players at all. I’ve never seen anyone not doing what is required at this level,” the Arsenal manager said in defense of his players.
“But we insisted a lot, we had so many possessions, we had so many chances, so many shots. This is football.”
It’s no surprise to hear him defend them – and he’s right, they had their chances.
But even with a rotated team, a manager like him will always want to see them at their best. BBC Sport said it was “one of the biggest upsets in Carabao Cpu history”. It’s hard to argue with that. Arsenal have bigger fish to fry, but whoever you support, it remains a great night of football.
