Four young Newcastle United stars have been selected for the England Under-18 squad to take part in this UEFA tournament and are now looking forward to today’s final. A 17-year-old trio of midfielder Sam Alabi and forwards Kyran Thompson and Michael Mills have been selected. Plus NUFC’s 16-year-old goalkeeper Roman Dowell.
The young Three Lions competed in the UEFA Friendly Cup in Switzerland during the September and October international window.
Having now completed three group matches, England Under-18s are through to Saturday’s final after finishing the group stage with a perfect record.
The eight-team tournament is hosted by UEFA at its base in Nyon.
Today’s final is at 4pm and Spain and England had perfect group records.
Spain defeated Ivory Coast, Brazil and Canada.
And for England Under-18s, this was their path to today’s final:
England 3 Colombia 2 (Man of the match Roman Dowell, Michael Mills scored the opener and Kyran Thompson had an assist, Sam Alabi came on in the second half)
England 2 Egypt 1 (England give chances to other members of the squad, which Dowell does, with three other NUFC youngsters coming on as second-half substitutes. Michael Mills had only been on the pitch for five minutes when he broke away from the defense before coolly beating the keeper to score the winner)
England 2 Republic of Korea 1 (Four United players started this final group game. Sam Alabi gave England the lead with a superbly powerful strike from 25 yards. Roman Dowell was once again man of the match, but some stunning saves to help England make it a perfect trio of group wins)
