Hundreds of people gathered in front of the London Palladium to catch a glimpse of football’s biggest stars on the red carpet. A security perimeter of metal fences and barricades was set up to try to keep out those without tickets.
But the BBC Sport team witnessed the barriers being scaled, broken and dismantled, with several people being kicked out by security after crossing.
The atmosphere was tense at times, with images on social media showing fans clashing with security and police.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told BBC Sport that officers were called in after “concerns were raised about crowd behavior and the potential for a breach of the peace”.
“The order to dismantle Unit 35 was confirmed at 19:49 GMT and was in effect until 04:00 on Tuesday, October 27,” the statement said.
“Officers cleared the crowd, which started throwing scaffolding clips and bricks at the police. No officers were injured.
“During the evening, officers dealt with a relatively small number of individuals climbing onto a neighboring building.”
He added that two arrests were made – one for breaking the demolition order and the other for affray and violent disorder.
