Xabi Alonso disappointed Chelsea fans with some of his decisions in Saturday’s defeat against Spurs and he compounded those frustrations with his comments after his Carabao Cup exit last night.

The Blues manager described the EFL Cup as the “least important competition” his side have been involved in after losing on penalties. This did not go down well with many supporters.

You can watch the new manager’s speech in the clip posted here:

Alonso puts his foot down with angry Chelsea fans

We miss out on this. Obviously, that’s a stupid thing to say. Fans traveled all the way to Liverpool to watch a pretty poor performance in defeat, then you’re implying the game doesn’t matter. This is obviously disappointing. He shouldn’t have said that, just for publicity.

On the other hand, he is only telling the truth (it’s a less important competition than the FA Cup or the Premier League) and the team he put in was stronger than expected. He showed with his actions that it mattered, he shouldn’t have turned it away with his words.

In other news…

Emmanuel Emegha got his first competitive minutes for Chelsea last night and could play a vital role on Saturday.

Alonso did not play Estevao for a minute in the game and had to answer questions about it afterwards.

Estevao did not appear during the game, but the fans chanted his name in the second half. It’s a strange situation.
