Veteran Canadian defender Vanessa Gilles will miss the women’s soccer friendly against Denmark after suffering a muscle injury against Bayern Munich.

The 30-year-old Olympic champion played 63 games for the Canadian national team and was named the 2024 Canadian Soccer Women’s Player of the Year.

“Washington Spirit” defender Elisabeth Tse was called up to replace Gilles. The ninth-seeded Canadians will host 12th-seeded Denmark next Friday at Montreal’s Stade Saputo, and the teams will meet again on Oct. 12 at BMO Field in Toronto.

The matches are Canada’s final warm-up window before the CONCACAF W Championship, when they face Panama in the quarterfinals on Nov. 28.

The tournament serves as a qualifier for both the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
