Tottenham’s share of £98m boost after NFL London Games stadium dazzle

The NFL has returned to north London as part of its annual commitment to play at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur are set to play their part in a £98m boost to the UK economy as they welcome the NFL back to the capital.

The annual NFL London Games hit N17 on Sunday with 60,907 fans packed into Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to watch the Indianapolis Colts defeat the designated host Washington Commanders 30-13. With a contract between the Spurs and the NFL that runs through the 2029/30 season, the new stadium has hosted regular-season games since its opening in 2019, and will be upgraded based on success over the years.

The home of the North London club features a retractable pitch that allows the sport to be played on a low surface with proper sight lines, and was designed as the first purpose-built NFL stadium outside of America. Huge revenues from NFL games and other events at the ground have helped north London stay within financial fair play limits when it comes to big spenders in the transfer market.

The NFL also generates money for the UK economy, with crowds expected to spend up to £98 million this month at the London Games – with the average fan spending £453 on tickets, travel, accommodation, food and drink, merchandise and entertainment.

New research from American Express, the official payments partner of the NFL, reports that spending across the capital during 2025 NFL Game Weekends is up 10 percent on average over the previous year.

Their survey found that 91 per cent of fans planning to attend the London Games are traveling outside of London, with 70 per cent planning to stay at least two to three nights. Half of fans attending the game have previously purchased or expect to purchase official NFL merchandise, such as team jerseys, hats and souvenirs, while 34 percent expect to spend on American-style food and beverages.

Half of those surveyed said attending the NFL London Games felt like a bigger event than attending a regular sporting event, with most saying the overall experience of the facilities was an important part of the appeal.

Since 2007, all 42 NFL regular season games have been played in London, welcoming more than three million fans to stadiums and generating an economic impact of more than £2 billion.

This Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles face the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the NFL London Games conclude, while the Houston Texans face the Jaguars at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, October 18.
