This is why Alonso decided to use Estevao against Man United

Chelsea used Estevao against Manchester United despite previously neglecting him. There is a very good reason for this.

The past two weeks have seen Xabi Alonso increasingly questioned about his use (or lack thereof) of Estevao.

The Chelsea boss had to continually deflect questions about when the youngster would get a chance – as he refused to reveal his plans to use him against Man U on Saturday. So why this game? According to Kieran Gill’s Chelsea Confidential article for the Daily Mail, it was all about the opposition.

Alonso and his coaches are concerned about Estevao’s physical fitness for Premier League teams. But United were “considered weaker” than most teams in the league. They called it right – the Brazilian had a great game and should have scored.

The question now is whether Alonso will again use the youngster from the start against Sunderland. I wonder if it will be decided that they are “weak” enough for Estevao to accept. If he had gone the way the fans wanted him to, or if he had simply made the biggest impression against Man U, then surely Este would have been selected.
