The first FIFA Women’s Club World Cup is coming to North American soil.
FIFA announced Thursday that the tournament will debut in the United States in 2028. Host cities have not yet been determined, but are expected to be announced at a later date.
The 19-team competition will take place between 5 and 30 January 2028 and seven teams have already been determined; Arsenal, Club America, Barcelona, Gotham FC, Naegohyang Women’s FC, Corinthians SC and Wuhan Jiandga WFC.
UEFA will have the most representation in the six-team tournament. AFC, CAF, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL will each have three clubs in the competition, while OFC will have one team.
If a club wins the UEFA Champions League multiple times between 2024 and 2027, additional places will be allocated based on the clubs’ ranking, FIFA has confirmed.
“We carried out a detailed assessment to identify the most suitable host for the first edition of the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup,” Dame Sarai Bareman, FIFA’s director general of women’s football, said in a statement. “Finally, the United States’ recent excellence in hosting FIFA’s top tournaments, combined with the significant interest in women’s soccer there and its elite sporting infrastructure, make the country a notable choice.”
The USA hosting the tournament continues a recent trend of major competitions being held in North America, most recently the FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA
In addition, the United States is also slated to host the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with an official announcement scheduled for November.
Participating member associations will receive preparation money from FIFA, and the total earnings will be split into $2.5 million. Those funds are planned to be distributed at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
