On Saturday 10 October 2026, Thalente Mbatha started the MTN8 final in his hometown of Durban, two months after a knee injury cut his season short. “Orlando Pirates” lost to “Mamelodi Sundowns” with a score of 2:0. Analyst Benedict “Tso” Vilakazi still told iDiski TV: “Thalente played very well.”

From KwaMashu to Los Angeles, here’s what has been mentioned about the Bafana Bafana midfielder.

From Real Bunnies to Pirates

He joined Real Rabbits, a KwaMashu side, at the age of ten. Then came Durban FC. In a July 2025 SuperSport profile, he described how his primary school teacher told him he would “give him nothing” and the school banned him from playing until a coach convinced his mother to return. Highlands Park gave him his debut in 2020. Later that year, SuperSport United signed him and he spent over three seasons in Tshwane before Pirates signed him on a six-month loan in January 2024.

The contract became permanent. “He will remain with the Pirates,” his agent Mike Makaab confirmed in June 2024.

Talent Mbatha stats: 2025/26 and this season

Pirates waited 14 years for the 2025/26 season. On 23 May 2026, they were promoted to the league after beating Sundowns 2–0 by one point at Orbit College in Mbombela. Their previous title was in 2012. Mbatha played 70 minutes that day, FotMob shows.

FotMob credits him with 28 domestic games, 22nd in the league, plus one goal and one assist that season. The goal came in the Nedbank Cup.

Despite this, no one signed him for goals.

This season has been stop-start. So painful. Briefly News reports that he was sidelined on August 10 with a knee problem and returned to full training on September 28. The final was his third game of the 2026/27 season and three days later he won 3–0 against TS Galaxy. “He is an important player for us,” said head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. “So we’re playing two days later and we don’t want to take any chances with that.”

Bafana Bafana, AFCON and the World Cup

He scored on his debut. It was an AFCON qualifier against Uganda on 6 September 2024 in Soweto – 2-2. Four days later, he scored again in a 3–2 win over South Sudan in Juba and his third goal on 14 October 2025 in a 3–0 World Cup qualifier win over Rwanda in Mbombela.

He was a squad pick for AFCON 2025 in Morocco. He started the 0-1 loss to Egypt and came off the bench against Zimbabwe. Cameroon then won 2-1 in Rabat.

The World Cup was different.

Hugo Broos named him on 28 May 2026 and FotMob recorded him in all three group games against Mexico, Czech Republic and South Korea. In the Round of 16 at SoFi Stadium on June 28, he came on at halftime for Relebohile Mofokeng, while Steven Eustaquio scored the winner for Canada in regulation time.

What does Thalente Mbatha earn?

No one outside the club knows.

The Pirates did not disclose his salary. Salary lists in the South African press, including an updated Short News rating of 2026, leave him out, and Transfermarkt does not indicate an end date for the contract. Any monthly figure you see online is an estimate.

His transfer value is at a record level. Soccer Laduma have reported that Pirates, who are of interest to an English Championship club in 2025, have been penciled in for around R20 million. Makaab dismissed the story: “Honestly, it’s not true.” Transfermarkt put him at €2 million in June 2026. List of highest paid Bafana Bafana players, showing how salaries vary across the squad.

The Nigerian angle

Super Eagles fans have seen him up close. On 9 September 2025, he was on the bench when South Africa and Nigeria drew 1–1 in Bloemfontein. Nigeria lost the play-off final to DR Congo on penalties in Rabat that November. The rivalry is covered in our Bafana Bafana vs Nigeria AFCON record and our guide to Bafana’s World Cup qualifiers.

Off the field, he keeps his faith and family. He grew up in a house full of boys. His mother sends him Bible verses before every game.

A long wait at hometown side, Durban FC, SuperSport, then a loan that ended with a league title: well worth exploring for a home-based NPFL midfielder with dreams of a move south.
