Serie A, the Premier League, La Liga and the Bundesliga will reportedly issue a joint statement demanding urgent governance reforms from FIFA amid the Gianni Infantino controversy.
The FIFA president has stuck to his job despite growing calls for him to step down, a situation sparked by plans to sell commercial rights to events such as the World Cup to private investors.
Although the plan was abandoned, it did prompt several federations, including Italy, to withdraw their support as he sought re-election.
Serie A and other leagues take stance
According to the British Sky Sports reportFurther pressure will come on the embattled FIFA president when four of the five top club leagues issue a joint statement on Friday.
Italy’s Serie A, Premier League, La Liga and Bundesliga should unite and demand more consultation on key issues such as the global football calendar.
It is unclear whether Infantino will be asked to resign, but it further fuels efforts to remove him as FIFA president.
The focus should be on demanding more independent oversight from FIFA and giving stakeholders, including leagues, a more meaningful role in major decisions.
This is not surprising because while UEFA is very opposed to the European Super League project, FIFA is believed to be quietly supporting the breakaway plan.
Clubs are also frustrated by the idea of a further expansion of international fixtures, making the fixture list even more congested.
