Sam Coffey will miss the USA Women’s National Team’s games against Spain due to injury.

Gotham FC midfielder Jaelin Howell will replace the Manchester City midfielder on the USWNT’s training camp roster for the October international window.

According to a USWNT press release, Coffey suffered the injury during Manchester City’s 4-2 win over Arsenal on Sunday.

“(T)he highs and lows of football,” Coffey wrote on Instagram after the announcement. “Epic wins and deep disappointments follow. But I know my God wastes nothing and somehow, it’s all part of His story. I’ll be cheering for my girls from afar. Come back soon 🩵”

Howell has six career goals since her 2020 USWNT debut. The 26-year-old last appeared as a substitute against Italy in 2025.

A consistent starter for Gotham, Howell currently ranks third in the National Women’s Soccer League in tackles, interceptions and wins.

The change isn’t the first change the USWNT has made to its roster before facing world number one Spain on Oct. 10 in Washington, D.C. and Oct. 13 in Chester, Pa.

Utah Royals defender Kate Del Fava earned her first senior call-up on Sunday as a replacement for injured Chelsea centre-back Naomi Girma, who favored Coffey to play in the Women’s Super League.
