Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has been a bit of a disappointment in his press conferences as he seems determined not to give anything away.
But he did something this week that we really like. After his side took an early lead that helped them get the result once again, the media asked what the team’s secret was for scoring all those early goals.
It would have been easy for him to take the compliments and give him some credit, but instead he insisted that there was nothing special he did.
“I have nothing to do with it,” he said modestly.
“I have no explanation. I am not trusted,” he said.
Rodgers reveals Alonso’s pre-match inspiration
Well, one of his players disagrees. Speaking after the game, Morgan Rodgers explained the Blues’ hot start:
“I put it down to the manager’s team talks. He fires us up, gets us going. We always want to start on the front foot.
“It’s about starting well and getting the lead. We’ve won a lot of games, especially at home, by going behind early goals. We have to keep going, that’s a good trait.”
It’s clear that Alonso has an inspirational side that he keeps in the dressing room.
