Newcastle v Everton preview
Newcastle United will look to avenge their EFL Cup defeat at Everton when they meet again in the Premier League on Thursday.
The Magpies saw their hopes of another deep run in the competition in 2025 dashed as they were beaten 3-1 at Everton in the last 16, with the Toffees booking a quarter-final clash with League Two Fleetwood Town.
They meet again just four days later, with Newcastle a point above Everton in the league after beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at home last week.
Newcastle’s previous 1-0 home loss to Aston Villa saw them produce a refined attacking performance and they will be hoping to do better this time around in front of their fans at St James’ Park.
Matthias Jaissle’s men endured a two-game Monday night to forget this season, losing 4-1 away at Leeds United and Coventry City.
The Coventry game and the cup loss at Everton followed remarkably similar patterns, with Newcastle having the lion’s share of possession and shots but being comfortably beaten by a team whose chances were far more ruthless.
Indeed, Newcastle had 26 shots to Everton’s 11 on Thursday. David Moyes’ men scored three goals from five attempts on target, with Newcastle having to settle for a consolation from Dan Burn.
Those numbers spoke volumes for Everton’s defensive organization and Newcastle’s problems with teams being able to play with relative ease and score effectively on the counter.
Away from home, Everton will likely be more than happy to play at half-time as they aim to avoid a third league defeat in a row, knowing a win would lift them above Newcastle and a host of other teams into the top seven.
The challenge for Jaissle and Newcastle is to find a way to avoid the same fate they suffered in the cup. There will be more scrutiny on the German if his side fail to complete the task.
Premier League Schedule

Everton’s Jack Grealish has been left out of the squad for the cup match due to a breach of club discipline. It is not known if he will be available for selection.
However, it is hoped that defender Jarrad Branthwaite can return from concussion.
