I just wanted to remind you about the 11 Newcastle United players who took the field against Aston Villa’s 11 last Saturday.
The first half was very anxious because the visitors were the better team.
United improved after the break and were marginally the better side in my opinion.
However, the Newcastle United players struggled to break through a Villa defense that looked too solid to defend.
That lead given by Manzambi, ironically a midfielder Newcastle United were poised to sign as one of their top summer targets, only for the player to stall and eventually leave for Aston Villa.
If we look at United’s 1:0 defeat…
The 11 Newcastle United players who started last Saturday:
Hornicek, Thiaw, Botman, Hall, Lewis Miley, Gonzalez, Willock, Joelinton, Wissa, Barnes, Fernandez-Pardo
The 11 Aston Villa players who started last Saturday:
Suzuki, Cash, Lindelof, Mings, Wan-Bissaka, Kamara, Joao Gomes, Alysson, Manzambi, Buendia, Jackson
This is just a quick snippet.
I will not bore you with long details.
Bottom line, exactly which Newcastle United player would they get out of a combined 22 teams that included 11 Aston Villa players???
Aston Villa certainly deserved to win, but I think a lot of the reaction from the media and many Newcastle United fans was over the top.
Lots of injured players for United and also, as Matthias Jaissle revealed BEFORE the Villa match, many players back in the matchday squad but not fully fit.
Joelinton came back into the team to give us something extra, but he was still half fit.
My answer would be that, as of Saturday, Lewis Hall is the only Newcastle player who will be 100% in the Villa squad.
When combining the 22 players, I would say that normally Malik Tiaw would make the best XI, but on Saturday he was not great.
For the foreseeable future, I’d say players like Hornicek, Gonzalez, Barnes and Wissa are all good enough to compete with Villa’s players. While young players like MFP need time.
Aston Villa have had a slow start to the season (like 12 months ago) but are clearly a good team.
They will be promoted to the Premier League and are second only to PSG in the Champions League table on goal difference.
