Despite facing an uncertain future on the pitch, Dan Burn has taken on a key leadership role at Newcastle United.
The experienced defender was named Newcastle’s new captain before the start of the season, but his importance to the team may increasingly come from off the pitch. The 34-year-old has been sidelined with an ankle injury and has yet to feature this season.
according to Football Insiderr, Byrne is expected to see his playing time reduced under head coach Matthias Jessel, with Sven Botman and Malik Thiaw currently ahead of him in the defensive pecking order. Fabian Schaal has also recently returned to full fitness after agreeing a new contract.

Byrne made 44 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle United last season, mainly as a central defender and also as a left-back.
However, Newcastle have significantly lowered the average age of their squad this summer and the club believe Byrne can provide valuable experience and leadership.
The defender is also set to expire in June 2027. Newcastle are expected to discuss new terms with him, although any new deal is likely to involve Byrne accepting a smaller role on the pitch.
The situation could ultimately see the former Brighton defender become a more influential figure behind the scenes. His experience at the highest level and knowledge of the club make him an important part of the team’s young players.
