Although Canada returns to action after the World Cup with a win, Jesse Marsh is eager to see a “cleaner” performance than he had against Chile.
Despite being dominant for much of the game, Canada managed a 1-0 victory over their nine-man opponent in a friendly at BMO Field.
Jonathan David scored the winning goal in the 12th minute. Jakob Shafirberg’s cross was met by Seir Larin and his shot was saved, but the ball bounced to David who calmly fired home.
In the 35th minute, Lucas Cepeda was sent off for a high kick on Richie Laryea.
Gabriel Suazo also left early, receiving his second yellow card five minutes after the break – his first coming for a dissent before he fouled Nico Sigur.
Canada tried hard to make the most of their advantage in the second half, but despite finishing with 22 shots and an expected goals against rating of 2.6 (xG), 16 of which came after the break, they were unable to get a second goal.
Marsh hopes to see the team improve in this area, building on their World Cup exit in the last 16.

Canada also hit the woodwork twice, with Laria and Jamie Knight-LeBel nearly hitting the woodwork in the final six minutes of the 90th minute.
Larin was a constant threat for them, with a game-high four shots on goal, 12 touches in the opposition penalty area, two “big” chances and winning two of four aerial duels.
“Every game we play is a must-win,” Larin said.
“You’re not here to compete, just to draw lots or get results.”
