Manchester United are reportedly tracking Twente defender Ruud Nijstad as the club continue to evaluate long-term options for the back line.
The 18-year-old has emerged as one of the most highly rated young centre-backs in the Netherlands and is already attracting the attention of several top European clubs.
United’s interest fits in with their recent recruitment strategy of targeting young players with significant development potential.
Man United are interested in young defender Nijstad
According to The Athletic, Man United are among a number of leading European clubs tracking Nijstad following his move to FC Twente.
The left-footed defender has established himself as an important first-team player and is under contract until 2029, meaning Twente are in a strong position should clubs make formal approaches.
Nijstad was also linked with Barcelona in the summer and VoetbalPrimeur reports that the Spanish club had already looked into signing him before Manchester United entered the picture.
Standing at around 1.95 meters tall, Nijstad combines the technical qualities expected of a modern left-sided centre-back with an obvious physical presence.
He has made eight appearances and scored one goal in the Eredivisie this season, while continuing to gain experience in European competition.
Nijstad would be a smart long-term gamble

The appeal for United is easy to understand.
Lisandro Martinez’s long-term future remains uncertain, while Harry Maguire is entering the final stages of his career. This creates a need for another centre-back, particularly one who is comfortable on the left wing.
Nijstad fits this profile almost perfectly. He is young, left-handed, physically strong and already playing senior football regularly.
However, there is a legitimate question as to whether Man United need another developing defender right now.
Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are already young center backs with plenty of potential, so adding another rookie would increase the amount of predictability involved in rebuilding the defense. That means United may eventually have to choose between potential and immediate credibility.
If Nijstad is viewed as a future replacement rather than an instant starter, the deal makes sense. But if United lose their experienced defender next summer, they may need a more established centre-back alongside him.
Either way, it makes sense to follow Nijstad now. His profile is rare, his ceiling appears high, and waiting a year could make him significantly more expensive.
