Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique has insisted Man City “deserve to win” trophies amid suggestions that history could be rewritten if the Premier League is found guilty of multiple breaches of FFP rules.

While many pundits and fans wanted the Manchester club to be stripped of their titles, which they claim were won through “fraud”, Enrique was content to say that “the trophies you win on the pitch stay on the pitch”:

“We’ll just have to wait and see what the final decision will be. I hope everything goes well for Manchester City because I think what they’ve done on the pitch in the last few years has been incredible and they’ve certainly deserved to win all the trophies they’ve won on the pitch. Now we have to wait and see what the authorities decide or what the referee says…

“The first thing you hear is a surprise, but we have to respect the process and wait for the final decision. The authorities are responsible for making these decisions. But if we talk only about football, they deserved these trophies. I love their football. Besides, we have to wait for the decision.

“Trophies you win on the pitch stay on the pitch. They deserved to win it and I hope they can avoid a sanction. But we have to wait.”

Enrique supports his friend Guardiola

Statements of the head coach of PSG are not so surprising. He played alongside Pep Guardiola at Barcelona and they have remained close ever since.

Enrique’s hope that City will avoid sanctions is due to his wish for the best for his friend.

Man City players did not make any mistakes

It is very easy for opponents to accuse the club of “cheating”, but as Enrique said, the game is won on the pitch, not in the boardroom or on the scoreboard.

Head coach Enzo Maresca and his players was criticized for his wild celebrations after beating Liverpool 3-0 at the weekend. They may represent the club but they have done themselves no harm, so the anger they face at Anfield and likely other away grounds is misdirected.

The players are just doing their job. They have no control over what their club does or what fate awaits him pending an appeal of the guilty verdict.
