I just looked at the Premier League table and was thinking about Newcastle United.
I know it’s Halloween but…
Is it as scary as some Newcastle United fans think?
Is this really justified or has mass hysteria taken over a significant proportion of Newcastle United fans?
This season was never going to be simple for NUFC, what happened over the summer ensured that.
So much turmoil on and off the pitch, a change of manager and a major reshuffle of the Newcastle United squad.
With key players leaving to meet UEFA SCR restrictions, the club will need to bring in serious cash and lower the wage bill. Recruiting has focused on less expensive, lower paid inexperienced young players from weaker foreign leagues.
Certainly no one thought that, on paper at least, it would amount to a stronger first team for the 2026-27 season, let alone a team at the same level.
I see and hear a lot of negative things, but I look at the Premier League table and it shows Newcastle United in eighth place with 11 points from their first eight league games.
A win at home on Monday night would take Newcastle United to 14 points from nine games. If these average points per game were to continue for the rest of the season, it would give NUFC 59 points. That would have been enough for a top-six finish in the Premier League table last season, with Liverpool finishing fifth on 60 points to qualify for the Champions League.
Newcastle’s win over Everton would ensure a top-six finish after this weekend, unless Leeds beat Bournemouth and Brentford beat Forest. Although Chelsea also lost to Man U, Matthias Jaissle and Newcastle United players will move into fifth place in the Premier League table on Monday.
This is not to suggest that everything is great at St James’ Park, but surely we need to keep things in some sort of perspective?
Premier League schedule for Saturday morning, October 31, 2026
Here’s hoping the Premier League table looks even closer to Monday’s game.
