Former Hibs, Celtic, Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers striker Anthony Stokes has been ditched by new club Apollo Smirny. The Greek Super League team terminated his contract due to his repeated disciplinary violations, and going AWOL became the last straw after he only played 4 games in his Greek career.
Vieira is flattered but happy with where he is now
Rookie manager and Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira says he is delighted to be taking over from Arsene Wenger with the Gunners but is delighted to be head coach of New York City FC. Vieira told New York radio station WNYE: “I spent nine years at Arsenal, which makes this club very special to me. But it’s not enough to coach this team. I’m always flattered to hear my name being linked to different football clubs. It’s good for your ego, but at the same time, I’m happy here. We’ll see what happens in the next few years.”
Lewandowski breaks goalscoring record
Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win over Hannover 96 was almost an inconsequential result as Bayern already lifted the trophy, but it did set a record for Robert Lewandowski. Just minutes after coming on as a substitute, Lewandowski scored Bayern’s second goal, taking Bayern’s total to 105 goals and making him the leading non-German scorer for a club in Bundesliga history (that’s such a mouthful to celebrate on a T-shirt!). This was also his 150th game in all competitions, taking his total to 190 games.
Dortmund fans cheer for the team
Dortmund fans have had to endure a poor season for their team, with the exception of on-loan Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi, and are now using banners to highlight their disgust at their performance. Before the game against Bayer Leverkusen, banners with the message: “Without will, without passion, without courage, without team – no one represents Borussia Dortmund better than you!” were dotted around the stadium. Whether that motivated the players or not, they cruised to a 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen, with Jadon Sancho scoring his first goal since joining from Manchester City in the summer.
Defeat to Burton confirms Sunderland’s relegation
A select group of teams have received a new addition as Sunderland became the third team in a row to be relegated from the Premier League to League One after being beaten by relegation battlers Burton Albion. Next season will be the Black Cats’ second outside English football’s top flight. Jack Rodwell still makes $60,000 a week…

I thought I’d end it today with a couple of Paul Gascoigne stories:
First, when he was at Everton, he couldn’t stay still and drove other players crazy, so Duncan Ferguson challenged him to a match. There was a £50 bet on who could lift a metal skip over their head the most times. Gazza went first and committed suicide entirely until he reached the age of 50. Sweat was pouring off him, his legs were shaking, and he was breathing heavily: “Beat that Dunk!” Duncan Ferguson didn’t even look up from the newspaper he was reading, and just said, “No, I can’t be bothered. Here’s £50”
Once, when he was training with Spurs, someone kicked the ball over the fence. Paul Gascoigne jumped over and shouted: “Don’t worry, I’ll get it” before disappearing. The next day, he jumped back over the fence with the ball and deadpanned, “I got it!”
He also had a strange fetish for his England duties, which included Les Ferdinand. I think this needs to be told in his own words: “In the dressing room, Les Ferdinand, I swear, when he took his clothes off, you should have seen the size of his fucking penis. He made my penis look tiny. I said ‘Les, Les, please let me grab that thing’. So he told me to hold it. And I went out and got a blindfold on, scored, right out’, and every time we played for England, Les would be ‘hurry up and finish with Gazza’.”
