Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 at the CBS Arena for their first home Premier League win since 2001.

Having beaten Nottingham Forest 1-0 before the international break, Coventry started with a desire to get back into the game.

Newcastle dictated proceedings for long periods after that, but Sidiki Cherif fell further behind as Coventry made a thunderous start to the second half with Sidiki Cherif doubling their lead.

Sven Bothman’s thunderous strike gave Newcastle hope of at least a point, but Ellis’ Simms effort made the points safe for Coventry, before Steven Mfuni added gloss to the scoreline with a shot off the post as the Sky Blues sealed their first top-flight win at home since a 1-0 win over Sunderland in April 2001.

The tone of the evening was set when Horniček failed to collect a loose ball in the box under pressure from Ephron Mason-Clark. As he tried to regroup, he was beaten by Cherif, who fell under a challenge from the Czech international.

Referee John Brooks showed little hesitation in pointing the point and Rudo made no mistake, sending Hornicek the wrong way to break the deadlock.

Barnes had the first chance for Newcastle, who started 11th in the Premier League but are in contention for fourth with a win, but he denied Matias Fernandez-Pardo an opportunity to equalize with good work down the left, firing straight at Carl Rushworth.

Belgium forward Fernandez-Pardo looked most likely to level matters before the break but saw few promising chances to do so as Newcastle dominated after falling behind.

Fernandez-Pardo oddly dummied the ball at the near post instead of turning home from Jacob Murphy’s right-wing cross and was then denied the chance to nod in from point-blank range with a brilliant goal-line save by Bobby Thomas.

Coventry were again grateful to Thomas when Fernandez-Pardo scored and rounded Rushworth, but his effort on target was blocked by the recovering centre-back.

And Newcastle were punished for missing those opportunities three minutes into the second half, when Cherif fired an unerring shot from the edge of the area into the bottom right-hand corner after the visitors failed to deal with a long throw.

Cherif was then denied the chance to make it 3-0 after some dreadful defending from Botman, before Joe Willock made an equally bad mistake at the other end as he blazed over after sending him in at the near post after some neat build-up play.

However, Newcastle found a lifeline in spectacular fashion, centre-back Botman proving a tough resource as he powered home a stunning strike from the edge of the area where Rushworth had no chance.

A comeback looked the most likely outcome at this point as the Magpies pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but as Simms pounced after Lewis Hall lost the ball deep in his own half, his shot hit Malick Thiaw high and a helpless Horniček misstepped.

It proved a landmark strike, but Frank Lampard’s men had more to celebrate as Mfuni slotted home a brilliant fourth to cap off a night that will live long in Coventry’s memory.
