Calvin Bassey is on Manchester United’s radar, with the Fulham captain’s contract expiring next summer and at least five other clubs following suit.
According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United are keeping tabs on the 26-year-old and their football department have been impressed with what they have seen this season. Interest in the Nigerian footballer is said to be increasing.
It’s not hard to see why the timing is right for them. United have conceded seven goals in their last two competitive games, a 4-1 defeat at Como in the Champions League and a 3-0 loss at home to Bournemouth, and Michael Carrick is expected to reshuffle his defense for the visit of Chelsea at 12.30pm on Saturday.
Lisandro Martinez, meanwhile, faces an uncertain future after criticizing the club’s hierarchy following the defeat to Atletico Madrid. He is reportedly ready to leave and Barcelona are investigating.
Why is Calvin Bassey applying to Man United?
Despite their struggles for consistent results, Bassey has been one of the standout performers for Alvaro Arbeloa’s Fulham side and has been entrusted with the captain’s armband.
It also offers two tasks for one signature. He can play at centre-back or left-back, has Premier League experience and doesn’t turn 27 until December.
Back line for rebuilding
This versatility is important as United prepare for an extensive defensive rebuild in 2027. Luke Shaw, Martinez and Harry Maguire are out of contract next summer and Maguire turns 34 in March.
Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are young centre-backs who still have work to do to prove they can be key players at Old Trafford, while Matthijs de Ligt has just returned from a long-term injury. Carrick’s own future became a major point of discussion after these two heavy defeats.
Who else wants Calvin Bassey?
United will not have the field to themselves. Newcastle United and Everton are monitoring Bassey as they look to sign a defender of their own this season, with Everton already in competition with United for Ryan Ait-Nouri.
“Inter Milan”, “Borussia Dortmund” and “RB Leipzig” are following him abroad.
Fulham still hold an important card
Fulham are not helpless here. They have the option to extend Bassey’s contract for a further 12 months and are keen to agree new terms.
Suitors could still see the chance to secure a cut-price deal, but this option means any deal consideration is dependent on what Fulham do next.
Can Calvin Bassey fix Man United’s defence?
On its own, no. Seven goals conceded in two games is a bigger problem than any signing can solve and nobody knows yet who will make the team next season.
But it makes a lot of sense as part of the plan. A two-position captain whose contract situation works in the buyer’s favor is the kind of smart move United need if three top-class defenders are about to walk out the door. We’d make him a serious option and we think Everton and Newcastle feel the same way.
