Bournemouth vs Liverpool Preview
Andoni Iraola expects a tough game against a “dangerous” Bournemouth side when he returns to the Vitality Stadium on Sunday.
After three years on the south coast, Iraura left Bournemouth for Liverpool this summer and will return to his former base for the first time this weekend in an exciting trip.
The Spaniard has had a mixed start to life on Merseyside. They are unbeaten in the Premier League but have won just one of their opening four games.
“I don’t think they’ve changed much,” he said of his former team. “Definitely in terms of names. They are using basically the same starting XI with very few changes. They lost Marcos Senesi and signed Antonio Silva, who is a very similar player.
“The main thoughts and concepts… I was lucky enough to speak to Marco Rose before I left. Things haven’t changed too much. They’re still very dangerous and a very good team, yes.”
Illaura will try to focus entirely on the job at hand ahead of the game, adding: “I think on a personal note I’m really looking forward to meeting and hugging them, the players that I love, the staff that I really admire that I’ve worked with. I was pushing them yesterday when they played their first European game. I wish them all the best.
“But there’s another part that’s most important now. We need to go out there and win and beat them and be as brutal as possible. All discussion will be left to after the game.”
Bournemouth secured a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday night, but Illaura believes his side’s Carabao Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur 48 hours earlier could be a factor.
“Yes. I think we have an advantage,” he said. “Most of the time it’s the opposite, we’re the last team to play and this time we’re playing two days before they play even though we’re also playing in midweek. There should be an advantage there.”
“And, I know where we’re going and I know their statistics there. Not just on the pitch but overall. I think you see all the games they’ve lost over a long period of time and you realize how difficult it is to beat Bournemouth. But I think I also have an advantage in that I know them very well. They also have an advantage in that they know me very well, so, from who’s perspective, so you never know.
Bournemouth are yet to taste Premier League success under Rose, but the former Borussia Dortmund boss hasn’t hit the panic button just yet.
He said: “It’s just about getting more results in both boxes in certain situations. The way we play with attitude and confidence – all those things [going] Toward a good direction. I learned to be patient. Of course, we are in a situation where we should force victory, but you cannot force victory through impatience or nervousness. “
