Baur says Celtic ‘deserved’ Europa League loss to Celta

“Celtic” midfielder Mika Baur claimed that the team deserved to lose 2:1 to “Celta Vigo” in the Europa League.

“Celtic” is in the second last place of the league table after three games, they have lost all their matches so far and only “Ararat-Armenia” is ranked below them on goal difference.

After Baur had given Celtic the lead in the 47th minute when he headed home from a poor clearance, Celta came from behind to score twice in three second-half minutes to seal victory.

Liam Scales then hit the post before Celta turned the script, with Javi Rodriguez leveling the score in the 68th minute when he headed home Sam Johnstone from a free-kick.

Rodriguez sealed the win three minutes later with a stunning effort from the edge of the box into the net, with Celtic unable to muster a reply after that.

“The way we played in the second half, in the last 30 minutes, we deserved it [the loss] in the end, – Baur told TNT Sports.

When asked if he knew why his team fell apart in such a way, he replied: “I can’t tell you, I’m sorry.

“You might score, they might score, a good team — then you’ve got to take back control, keep the ball a little bit longer to take the momentum away from them. You’ve got to break it down.”

Asked if he felt Celtic could progress in the Europa League, he added: “What else do we have to do? Absolutely. We need the points. That’s it.”

Celtic have lost four European games in a row for the first time since October/December 2017 (also four in a row).

And more worryingly, their 1-0 win at Stuttgart in February (also in the Europa League) means they have kept just one clean sheet in their last 16 matches in major European competitions.

After Celtic went behind, they managed just two of their eight shots, struggling against Celta’s attack as the Spanish side finished with 22 attempts in total.

Martin O’Neill’s side are now struggling in the Europa League if they are to secure a place in the play-offs, but he still hopes they can get past the league stage.

“We conceded a free kick and I thought a second ago we should have been fouled,” O’Neill told TNT Sports.

“They score from the free kick and it knocks us down a bit. It gave them a bit of momentum.

“I think if [Liam] Scales’ header went in to make it 2-0, we got the three points. We have now lost three matches; Interestingly, we still have a chance [of progressing]. We have to win here and we have to win away.

“We get ahead in the game; if we get the second goal, we win the match and it changes the whole dynamic.

“It didn’t happen, that’s all – we have to try to find a way to win European games.”
