Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia: Harry Benjamin’s driver ratings

Nico Hulkenberg – 7/10

The second quarter loss was disappointing, but he responded with a strong recovery on Sunday. After the Brazilian’s penalty, just outside the points and comfortably ahead of his Audi teammate Bortoleto, he moved up from 15th on the grid.

Lance Stroll – 6.5/10

Overall, a more competitive weekend for Aston Martin. Stroll joined Alonso in Q2 and kept himself out of trouble through a chaotic race to finish 12th, even if his teammate ultimately made the most of the opportunity.

Franco Colapinto – 7/10

He started 21st due to grid penalties, so 13th was a very respectable recovery. After a costly mistake last time, he kept things clean and made up a lot of ground in difficult conditions.

Oliver Bearman – 5/10

Another fairly anonymous weekend for Haas. He lost Q1 and although he gained a few places during the race, he had everything to finish 14th.

Esteban Ocon – 5/10

After dropping out in Q1, he was frustrated by Haas’ qualifying run plan and never recovered from it. He had a great start and was fighting well inside the top 10. He eventually finished behind Bearman and was unable to work the changing conditions enough to threaten the points.

Pierre Gasly – 5.5/10

The ninth qualifier was a great start, but Sunday opened up almost immediately. During the formation procedure, he almost lost the car on scratches and eventually dropped to 16th place as Alpine’s gamble did not pay off.

Carlos Sainz – 6/10

Williams struggled for pace all weekend, but 13th represented a good qualifying run. Contact with Bortoleto, who was penalized for the Audi driver, later marred his race further, so race 17 doesn’t tell the whole story.

Gabriel Bortoleto – 4.5/10

Audi had a lot to like leading up to the Q3, but the race put a stop to that good work. Contact with Sainz earned him a penalty and he finished 18th after starting in the top 10.

Sergio Perez – 4/10

The latter qualified and would never have made meaningful progress in all the chaos. Getting to the checkered flag was something for Cadillac at least, but 19th completed another tough weekend.

George Russell – 8/10

He offered a better race than the eighth place in the classification. He got off to a great start, staying in the top three for almost the entire day, and was on his way to another podium, even if he couldn’t catch his Mercedes team-mate Antonelli, until a powerplant failure stopped him with five laps to go.

Alex Albon – 4.5/10

Williams lacked pace from the start and his move to 20th left him with a lot of work to do. His latest retirement was caused by a gearbox problem rather than a driving error, but there was little sign of any meaningful problems before that.

Valtteri Bottas – 3.5/10

A weekend to forget. Cadillac edged ahead of teammate Perez but admitted the decision to slide was a risk before spinning in the gravel on lap nine and triggering the first safety car.
