Mathis Albert impressed in Borussia Dortmund’s first German Cup win of the season and could once again take the lead in the second round this week.
Albert and his Dortmund team-mates welcome Werder Bremen to Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday in search of a place in the third round of the DFB Pokal. The 17-year-old forward made two top-flight appearances, including an impressive 90-minute show against HEBC Hamburg at the start of September.
Mauricio Pochettino awarded Albert with his USMNT debut in the September-October window, and the young forward made four appearances in the top four in the process. Albert scored a goal and also scored a penalty kick, showing glimpses of his long-term potential for club and country.
Niko Kovac, who is in the midst of a busy schedule at Dortmund in October, could call on Albert in the cup where the Black and Yellows will favor promotion.
