Americans Abroad: A closer look at Pepi, Wright and other injured players

The Americans Abroad season may be in full swing, but not every player is currently playing for their club.

Haji Wright, Sam Coffey and Ricardo Pepi are just three of a long list of players currently unavailable for their clubs due to injury. Wright hasn’t played a minute for Coventry City this season, while Coffey most recently missed the US Women’s National Team’s October international window.

Pepi missed the US Men’s National Team’s September-October window and remains sidelined for PSV.

With important international matches coming up for both the USMNT and USWNT in the future, Mauricio Pochettino and Emma Hayes will want a full distribution of players.

Here’s a closer look at current injuries affecting the contingent of Americans abroad:

Pilgrim Wright

Haji Wright is yet to make his Premier League debut for Coventry City, but could do so until the end of 2026.

Wright has been sidelined since a quadriceps injury in August forced him to miss the first few months of the season. The 28-year-old has been instrumental in the Sky Blues’ promotion to England’s top flight and would be a welcome addition to Frank Lampard’s squad.

Lampard previously stated that if Wright’s recovery goes well, we could see him in November. However, it’s unlikely we’ll see Wright back with the USMNT until 2027.

Sam Coffey

The USWNT was without veteran midfielder Sam Coffey for the October window, but could bring it back for World Cup Qualifiers.

Coffey has been sidelined for Manchester City since picking up an ankle injury in the 4-2 WSL win over Arsenal on 4 October. She was forced to withdraw from the USWNT roster and begin a quick injury recovery plan.

There is no official date for Coffey’s return, but the Nationals and the USWNT will be hoping sooner rather than later.

Ricardo Pepi

Ricardo Pepi has been out of action for PSV for almost a month since his undisclosed injury.

Pepi was sent off early on in PSV’s 3–2 Eredivisie loss to FC Twente on 20 September. The American forward was unable to be part of the USMNT’s September-October window, which is key for Pepi after a quiet summer.

With PSV’s failure in recent weeks, manager Peter Bosz will be hoping Pepi returns as soon as possible.

Gianluca Busio

Venezia is in bad condition at present; Bottom of the Serie A standings and without a club captain.

Gianluca Busio has been sidelined since early September with a thigh injury. Busio suffered an injury on September 11th, which has played a large role in Venezia’s lineup over the past 4-6 weeks.

He could be back in early November, but Venezia has been tight-lipped about when we’ll get him in action.

Patrick Agyemang

A serious Achilles injury has not only ended Patrick Agyemang’s first season with Derby County prematurely, but also ended his 2026 World Cup hopes.

Agyemang suffered a torn Achilles on April 6 and has been ruled out of John Eustace’s squad this fall. The former MLS product was outstanding in his first season with the Rams, but has been a big loss in the first half of the current campaign.

Eustace has indicated that Agyemang could return in November, which would be a huge boost for Derby County and the USMNT.

Don’t shake hands

Middlesbrough will have only three American players for the foreseeable future.

Rokas Pukstas’ recent injury will keep him out for the rest of October. Pukstas joined the EFL Championship side from Hajduk Split in the summer but was reduced to just 12 minutes after the move.

Kim Hellberg has not guaranteed Pukstas’ return in November, opening the door to a longer absence over the winter.

Naomi Girma

Things don’t look promising for USWNT defender Naomi Girma.

Girma did not play for WSL side Chelsea in late September due to a calf injury. The veteran center back last played on September 2, but re-aggravated the injury later in the month and was forced to miss the USWNT’s October window along with the aforementioned Coffey.

Sonia Bompastor has not announced a return date for Girma, who will be a huge loss for Chelsea and the USWNT if he doesn’t return soon.

Cole Campbell

A recent ankle injury ruled Cole Campbell out of Elversberg’s last Bundesliga win this weekend.

Campbell was forced to miss Saturday’s 4-3 win over Augsburg after making his USMNT debut against Canada on October 6.

The dynamic winger/midfielder has been a key figure in Elversberg’s squad but is now expected to miss several weeks with his latest knock.

Cameron Carter-Vickers

Celtic have lost the services of Cameron Carter-Vickers since resuming club play.

Carter-Vickers last played against Rangers in a 1-0 Glasgow derby between the two SPFL giants on September 20. The veteran defender has since missed the last few matches with a muscle injury and hopes to return next weekend.

Celtic boss Martin O’Neill said Carter-Vickers could return next weekend if all goes well.

George Bello

American winger/defender George Bello’s muscle injury comes at a bad time for LASK.

Bello last appeared on October 11 against Rapid Vienna and has since missed the last two games against Liverpool and Austria Lustenau. Manager Didi Kuhbauer said Bello will undergo further tests to determine his availability in the fall, but has yet to give a date for his return.

Here’s a rundown of the rest of the injured:

Kevin Paredes – Paredes suffered a knee injury in late August and remains day-to-day for FC Utrecht. His last appearance was on August 22.

Conrad De La Fuente – De La Fuente has been sidelined since September 13 due to a muscle injury.

Donovan candles – Pines last played on September 19th at Grazer AK and was sidelined due to subsequent injuries.

Jonathan Klinsmann – Klinsmann is still recovering from a broken neck he suffered on April 18. He has not played for Cesena this season.
