Even the most pessimistic Tottenham fans couldn’t have predicted their start to the 2026/27 season.
Five games into the Premier League and Roberto De Zerbi’s side are still without a win. After defeats to Brentford, Newcastle and most recently Aston Villa, they have just two points in the table and their only goal was more or less a consolation goal in that defeat.
A lack of firepower continues to be a big talking point, with De Zerbi asking point-blank whether Spurs should sign an out-and-out striker like Nicholas Jackson after the Villa star’s dominant performance last weekend.
“The transfer market takes a long time to explain because first and foremost I am happy for the team. Otherwise we would cause controversy,” he said.
“The transfer market is long. Things change a lot. At the end of the transfer market there is Financial Fair Play. We have to respect Financial Fair Play.”

“We didn’t sell players that we initially thought there were possibilities and opportunities to sell. There are a lot of reasons.
“I think as a club and as a coach, we didn’t sleep. We know the characteristics of the players. We know everything. If we don’t make any different decisions, it’s because we can’t do it.”
Tottenham Hotspur loan star thrives
While the first-team squad struggled, a number of Spurs summer departures did little to ease tensions and they have flourished since emerging from Spurs’ chaos, leaving fans wondering why this is the case.
Will Lankshear is scoring goals for fun following his permanent move to Middlesbrough, Kevin Danso has quickly become a fan favorite following his loan move to Sunderland, while Mikey Moore has impressed in his role as a No.10 during his interim spell at FC Cologne.
Alasdair Gold has shared an update on some of Tottenham Hotspur’s young players on loan during the international break, with particular praise for 21-year-old Yusuf Akamrich, who is yet to make his senior debut in north London.
“Youssef Akamrich is a fantastic young winger who is at Leyton Orient and is a fantastic player,” Gold said in his latest report. Youtube video.
“He mainly plays on the right wing and he has scored three goals and three assists in his first seven games so far and he is doing well in the league.
“He had two assists against Wycombe the week before. It wasn’t great at the weekend (against Stevenage) but he’s a very exciting young player. When you watch him play, he’s a winger that excites you. I know what you’re saying, ‘Why don’t we see that at Tottenham?’
“We have Savio and (Mohamed) Kudus in his position, so unfortunately he will never get a chance at Tottenham. I don’t know if he will.”
Gold’s point about the competition Akamridge faces is a fair one, but it also raises questions about the man in front of him.
Savio joined Tottenham Hotspur for £75 million, making him one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history. So far the return has not come with a price tag – the winger is still waiting for his first goal or assist in the Premier League this season.
Kudus provides competition on the right, but Spurs will need more from this big-money signing if they are to turn their season around. Otherwise, fans may start asking why they don’t see a 21-year-old lighting up the league.
