The report highlights that although Liverpool exercised an option at the beginning of 2026 to keep his contract until the end of the season, formal discussions on a contract extension have not yet begun.
Liverpool’s succession dilemma
At 33, Alisson is still performing at a high level. He has started every league game so far this season and made a decisive save on Evan Nelson in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth, a save that earned him a nomination for the Premier League Saver of the Month. Currently, he has played 336 games for the club and has kept 138 clean sheets, ranking fourth on Liverpool’s all-time goalkeeper list.
Behind him, however, Giorgi Mamadashvili is waiting for his chance, while Andoni Iola has already trusted the Georgian in the cup. This leaves Liverpool with a real choice: renew Alisson and hand it over gradually, or provide Mamardashvili with a clearer path to number one.
Why free transfers appeal to Juventus
Juventus’ own goalkeeping situation becomes complicated. Camille Grabara is expected to be out for six to seven months after cruciate ligament surgery, with the club bringing in veteran Neto purely as an emergency replacement in the meantime.
No new contract talks have taken place between Alisson and Liverpool and any exit would be linked to the end of his current contract rather than agreeing to leave. Even if he is approaching thirty, a free transfer for an experienced goalkeeper would be an attractive proposition for Juventus, but this scenario will only become realistic if contract extension talks continue to be deadlocked at Anfield.
There is currently no obvious footballing reason for Liverpool to push their goalkeeper towards the exits. If Alisson continues to perform at this level, it may be wiser to keep him while slowly increasing Mamardashvili’s workload, rather than forcing him to make a sudden change (possibly leaving in 2027).
