Jessel’s own Gordon is already Newcastle’s most valuable player

At Newcastle United, Eddie Howe gave everything – penny for pound. However, this summer, knowing his project was exhausted, he resigned.

For Newcastle, who have already lost Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, this feels like the bitter cherry on a sour cake. Captain Bruno Guimarães was joining Premier League champions Arsenal for £75m, which was the final straw for Howe.

Maybe Howe feels his cartoonish midfield has been dealt a catastrophic hit, but the Magpies have actually signed some shrewd players this summer that could pay off handsomely in the long run.

Alexander Isak’s defection to Merseyside a year ago rocked Newcastle’s ship too much. Howe’s side never fully recovered and fell to 12th in the Premier League.

However, PIF has made up its mind not to let lightning strike twice, and Gordon’s sale has also been countered. Indeed, the big-money transfer has a friendly feel to it.

Gordon is undoubtedly a focal point under Howe, but he has only scored six goals over the past two seasons. Jaissle manages to breathe new life into the cartoonish attack, but it’s not quite as cool and fluid by any means.

The resurgence of Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes has also helped. Elanga endured a difficult first season on Tyneside and failed to score in the Premier League last season. This season he has scored two goals in three games and is playing with more enthusiasm.

And Barnes, always the biggest threat, looked more combative and engaged than he usually does on the left wing. Perhaps he thought it was time to step up and take on more responsibility now that Gordon had left for sunny Spain.

Gordon will still be missed. Matias Fernandez Pardo has the technical and physical attributes to make himself a talisman, but in reality he is another exciting forward who could become Jasser’s own version of a Three Lions winger.

Gordon may be up and down in front of goal, but there’s no denying the 25-year-old’s talismanic quality and his willingness to step up and be a regular.

Fernandez Pardo had a similar performance, but he has expressed his desire and expectation to challenge Yoane Visa for the center position.

Instead, Bazoumana Toure could emerge as the new Gordon over the course of the campaign. The Ivory Coast winger was one of the first signings this summer, signing for £43m in early July, a month after Gordon joined Barcelona.

The jump from the Bundesliga to the Premier League is a huge one. It was always expected that Toure would take time to settle in on Tyneside, and his role in the top flight so far underlines this.

However, Jaissle and his colleagues are confident he will make the leap. After all, Toure has established himself as Newcastle’s most valuable player – Transfermarkt suggests his £44m price tag exceeds that of every other player in the squad.

Of course, in reality, bringing in Fernandez Pardo and Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City for £50m would cost more, but there is no doubt that when Toure fully integrates into this new environment, he may burst into form.

Barnes has made a strong start to the season but the Ivorian paceman has the potential to occupy a left-wing role on Tyneside. Whether he does that in the coming weeks/months, or if it takes longer, remains to be seen – but there is no doubt that Newcastle are on to a winner by signing a potential superstar for a relatively low fee.

We have a feeling that when suitors inevitably start snooping around in the future, their offers will be well in excess of £43m.
