Manchester United have contacted former France boss Didier Deschamps as the club continue to explore managerial options amid growing uncertainty over Michael Carrick’s future.
French publication “Foot Mercato” reports that the leaders of the Manchester United board have contacted Deschamps in recent days to see if he is interested in managing Old Trafford.
The Red Devils hierarchy have been actively courting elite profiles to stabilize the club during a chaotic Premier League campaign.
The report adds that Deschamps has emerged as a top target, although United are also closing in on Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery, who is set to extend his contract with the club.
However, the report goes on to add that the 58-year-old is in no rush to return to management and is not particularly keen on working at Manchester United due to the current state of the club.
World Cup-winning pedigree on Didier Deschamps’ CV
Deschamps brings one of the most decorated managerial resumes in international football, leading France to FIFA World Cup glory in 2018 and a dramatic second-place finish in 2022.
The former midfielder, who experienced the Premier League first-hand as a Chelsea player in the 1999-2000 season, spent 14 trophy-laden years at Les Bleus before stepping down.
Having previously led Monaco to the UEFA Champions League final and Marseille to Ligue 1, his proven track record of managing superstar egos makes him an attractive option for Old Trafford’s decision-makers.
However, it would not be surprising if he shied away from his role at Old Trafford, as things at the club may need to be straightened out beyond managerial changes.
Despite Roma’s win, Carrick’s job remains uncertain
The link with Deschamps comes at a time when current head coach Michael Carrick’s position remains uncertain.
Despite securing a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over AS Roma in the UEFA Champions League, the miracle win did little to ensure Carrick’s long-term security.
Sitting near the bottom half of the Premier League table after an agonizing winless run, Carrick is under huge pressure as United’s board draw up contingency plans in case results do not improve quickly.
