Thierno Barry’s fourth top-flight goal of the season sent Everton up to seventh in the Premier League with a deserved win at Newcastle as the home fans booed their side after a second successive defeat at St James’ Park.
Lukas Hornicek scored from close range in the 49th minute after Kiernan Dewsbury Hall’s incisive pass failed to keep out Tyreek George’s arrowing shot.
Hornicek deflected headers from Jarrad Branthwaite and Jake O’Brien and the visitors pushed Dewsbury-Hall’s long-range effort over the target as the visitors went for a second, although Newcastle thought they had leveled when Anthony Elanga almost hit the post with Harvey Barnes’ inviting pass, hitting the post and glancing the ball past Jamski.
Visiting keeper Jordan Pickford was called into action for the first time just in second-half stoppage time, and he made amends to save Yoane Wissa’s rebound with his foot.
Jacob Ramsey’s rough tackle on Harrison Armstrong’s ankle earned the substitute a second yellow card seconds into stoppage time for Newcastle, who are 13th and have just one home league win this season, as they beat Hull City 2-1.
