Rangers’ next challenge comes on Saturday when they travel to Hampden, where Aberdeen await in the Scottish League Cup semi-final and McInnes hopes to get the better of his old club.
But he admits that despite Aberdeen’s poor form of late and Rangers being firm favorites to win, his side will have to “deliver it on the pitch”.
“People may see us as favorites for this, and I understand that, but we still have a game to win and Aberdeen are capable of putting in a big performance,” McInnes said.
“I’m just focused, if we’re at our level, hopefully that’s enough to win the game, but it’s going to take a strong performance for 90 minutes.
“It would be very important to get the first trophy, to build confidence, to build confidence. Traditionally, semi-finals can be very nerve-wracking and tense and sometimes not the best games because of what’s at stake.
“A semi-final is a one-on-one game, sometimes form goes out the window. They have a good, experienced manager in Robbo (Stephen Robinson) and Aberdeen have good players, experienced players and they will relish the opportunity.”
