Liverpool have ‘100%’ confidence in Wirtz and Barcola, says coach Iraola

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola says he has “100% confidence” in strikers Bradley Barcola and Florian Wirtz despite their slow start to the season.

The Reds suffered a heavy defeat to Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday and face LASK in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Liverpool spent around £220m on Wirtz and Barcola but are yet to see much of a return on their investment.

Wirtz has scored five Premier League goals in 15 months – none until this season – and was criticized by Jamie Carragher earlier this season, while Barcola is yet to find a point for the Reds.

“Bradley and Florian have had good, bad games this season, but we know their level and we’re sure they’ll do well for us,” Iraola said.

“The responsibilities are the same as the other senior players in the squad. The performances are absolutely the same. Sometimes we have to focus not just on the numbers.

“I was happy with a lot of things with Bradley the other day. We had good situations, we didn’t finish them. But he and Florian are players I trust 100%.”

Iraola confirmed that key trio Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai all remain injured but are “not far off” from returning to the side.

“We don’t have a lot of time to train, we have to prepare some videos, tactics and a bit outside with the ball, but we have to prioritize the freshness of the players,” he said.

Liverpool beat LASK twice in the Europa League three years ago, the last Austrian side to beat English opposition in a major European competition was Austria Wien in October 1991 against Arsenal.
